On 21st August 2024, FSSAI published a clarification regarding the selling/marketing of Milk & Milk products. Food Business Operators are selling or marketing milk and milk products like ghee, butter, and curd under the names A1 and A2, using their FSSAI License Number or Registration Certificate Number.
The differentiation between A1 and A2 milk is primarily based on the structural difference in the protein (Beta casein). Therefore, making any A2 claims for milk-fat products is misleading and non-compliant. The standards do not mention or recognize any differentiation of milk based on A1 and A2 types.
Instruction to FBOs:
Remove all claims related to A1 & A2 protein from the product. E-commerce FBOs are instructed to remove these claims immediately. However, FBOs are allowed to use up any pre-printed labels within 6 months from the date of this directive. No additional extensions or timelines will be granted.
