Unlicensed Food Businesses are Posing Health Risks to Kerala Residents

At Kozhikode in Kerala, the Food Safety Department has issued strict directives to business owners who deal with food-based enterprises to obtain FSSAI licenses in response to the rising incidences of food poisoning and the selling of contaminated or unhealthy food. However, many business owners continue to operate solely with the trade license approved by the municipal authorities. In a series of raids by FoSCoS cracked down on 150 businesses in the region shutting shop.

Big enterprises like restaurants serving in city areas were running without valid FFSAI licenses while petty food businesses, retailers, and street food vendors were selling the products without registration.

These types of incidents throw light on the lack of awareness among food businesses including small and big enterprises about the FSSAI guidelines and it all points to a need to develop a knowledge ecosystem for these vendors regarding the prerequisites to start a food venture.
