
During the 88th Executive Committee Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CCEXEC88) held in Rome from 14th–18th July 2025, member countries widely acknowledged India’s leadership in food standardization, especially for whole millet grains. India is developing this standard, which the Commission approved at CAC47 in 2024, in collaboration with Mali, Nigeria and Senegal as co-chairs.
Key Highlights:
- Recognition of India’s Role: India’s efforts in setting global food standards, especially for millets, fresh dates, and its role in Codex, received high praise.
- Standardization Progress: Work on millet standards reviewed; terms finalized at CCCPL11 (April 2025).
- The Codex Executive Committee endorsed India’s work on standards for fresh dates, as recommended by CCFFV23, for adoption at CAC48 in November 2025.
- New Proposals: India to co-chair new work on fresh turmeric and broccoli standards.
- Strategic Plan 2026–2031: India contributed significantly to shaping SMART KPIs for monitoring the Codex Strategic Plan.
- The FAO appreciated India’s regional training efforts in countries such as Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Timor-Leste.
- Codex Trust Fund Promotion: India urged underrepresented countries to utilize the Codex Trust Fund (CTF), referencing its own successful collaborations.
- Strong Representation: Delegates from MoHFW and FSSAI effectively represented India’s food safety and public health interests.
