FSSAI : Clarification on the Source of Coconut Water

On July 2nd 2021, FSSAI released a direction , taking reference from the FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives Regulation) Tenth Amendment Regulation 2020, which said that the product coconut water should be obtained from the tender coconut without expressing the coconut meat. 

After receiving representation from various stakeholders, stating that both tender and mature coconuts are used in the manufacture of coconut water and the difference is only based on the maturity. Keeping this in mind FSSAI has decided to make an amendment in the regulation stating that the source of coconut water can now be from mature coconut or a blend of  tender and mature coconut water but it should meet the standards specified for coconut water as per the regulation.
