FSSAI’s Note on Non-Sugar Sweeteners (NSS) and Aspartame

In May 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a fresh guideline concerning NSS, which includes a qualified suggestion discouraging the utilization of NSS for the purpose of managing body weight or reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

FSSAI has taken cognizance of the WHO’s report in the Indian context. It was found that country-specific studies are needed to reach the final conclusion. In the absence of substantive established evidence on the safety of NSS/ Aspartame, FSSAI is retaining the existing limits.
