On 6thSep 2023, FSSAI published a Letter to inform that the definition of food Under the FSS Act, 2006 includes Drinking water and water used in the food during its manufacturing, preparation, or treatment only. This water shall be packed in collarless, transparent, and tamper-proof bottles or containers.

FSS Act, 2006 ensures in accordance with the process, packaging, and labeling requirements of a food article. However, drinking water sold loose does not fall under the ambit of the FSS Act. The amendment to the FSS Act,2006 proposal is already in an advanced stage of consideration. Therefore, it won’t be feasible to incomplete the instant proposal at this stage.
