FSSAI issued a Direction for FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018

On 19th July 2024, FSSAI issued a direction regarding the omission of the statement “People with Thalassemia may take under medical supervision and persons with sickle cell Anaemia are advised not to consume iron-fortified food products” from the labels of the products fortified with iron.

This has been decided after a report submitted by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, headed by DG ICMR to review advisory on Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anaemia. Accordingly, compliance with sub-regulation (4) of regulation 7 of the FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018 is omitted with immediate effect.
