To empower consumers by enhancing their understanding of the nutritional value of the products they consume and enabling them to make healthier choices, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) made a significant decision. In the 44th meeting of the Food Authority, chaired by Shri Apurva Chandra, the FSSAI approved a proposal to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Labeling and Display) Regulations, 2020. This will mandate that nutritional information regarding Total Sugar, Salt, and Saturated Fat be displayed in bold letters and relatively larger font sizes on the labels of packaged food items.
The specific details regarding the font format and size have not yet been made public. Additionally, there is no mention of any changes to the percentage of Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and serving size on the labels. The draft notification for this amendment will be made available to the public to invite suggestions and objections.
In 2022, the FSSAI also discussed implementing front-of-pack labelling to indicate total energy, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat, Added Sugar, and Sodium, along with their percentage contribution to the RDA, on the front of food packages. This initiative is yet to be implemented.
Prioritizing the development of clear and distinguishable labeling requirements is crucial in the global effort to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Clear labeling helps consumers make informed dietary choices, leading to healthier lifestyles and a reduction in diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It is essential that these amendments are brought into force and implemented effectively in a timely manner to ensure they achieve their intended impact on public health.
