World Food Safety Day 2025

June 6, 2025 | By Food Safety Works

On June 7, 2025, the global community will observe World Food Safety Day, a pivotal initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This annual event underscores the importance of safe food practices and the collective responsibility of governments, producers, and consumers in ensuring food safety.

Theme for 2025: “Food Safety: Science in Action”

The theme for this year, Food Safety: Science in Action”, emphasizes the critical role of scientific knowledge in preventing foodborne illnesses, which affect approximately 1.6 million people daily and result in an annual economic burden of US$110 billion in low- and middle-income countries.

This theme highlights that while scientific research provides the foundation for food safety standards and guidelines, it is the practical application of this knowledge—through effective policies, practices, and responsible choices—that ensures the safety of our food from farm to table. World Health Organization (WHO)

But food safety is a shared responsibility. Governments, businesses, and consumers all play a role in ensuring food is safe at every step.

Conclusion

As we observe World Food Safety Day 2025, let’s commit to turning knowledge into action. With science as our guide and collaboration as our strength, we can build safer, more resilient food systems for all.

Let’s make safe food not just a goal—but a reality.
