The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to Lotte India Corporation Pvt. Ltd., Ferns N Petals Pvt. Ltd., and Kubera Foods over alleged misleading product claims and labelling violations.
According to the food regulator, the companies have been asked to explain why regulatory action should not be initiated against them for claims that may mislead consumers regarding the nature, composition, or quality of their food products.
Among the observations highlighted by FSSAI were concerns related to product labels carrying claims such as “100% Natural,” “100% Vegetarian,” and other promotional statements that may not comply with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations. The regulator has directed the companies to submit their explanations within the stipulated time.
This action forms part of FSSAI’s ongoing enforcement drive to improve transparency in food labelling and ensure that consumers receive accurate and truthful information while making purchasing decisions. In recent weeks, the authority has intensified scrutiny of misleading brand names, health claims, and packaging statements across various food categories.
For Food Business Operators (FBOs), this serves as an important reminder to carefully review product labels, marketing materials, and packaging claims to ensure they are scientifically substantiated and fully compliant with applicable FSSAI regulations. Misleading claims not only invite regulatory action but can also impact consumer trust and brand reputation.
Food Safety Works advises food businesses to conduct periodic label compliance reviews and verify that all claims made on packaging adhere to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations.
