The recent raid conducted by FSSAI officials in a local meat shop based in Tuticorin discovered 495 Kg of spoiled beef. After further investigation, it has also been found that the shop owner did not have any FSSAI certification to conduct the business.
The 495 kg of beef stored in the freezer was spoiled as the temperature had not been maintained in a proper way, which was then disposed of after proper sanitization.
Such incidents throw light on incompetent surveillance systems and a lack of awareness among food businesses. This also highlights the question of whether or not customers know what needs to be checked before buying any food goods.
