On 30^th October 2023, FSSAI issued a direction regarding the source of iron salts prescribed for vitamin & mineral premix and Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK). It has been observed that FBOs often specify the nutrient name, such as ‘Iron’ on the label ingredients for fortified food products, without indicating the chemical name of the salt added. It has been mandated that FBOs specify the exact ingredient on the label of both retail & non-retail containers in accordance with provisions of FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 & FSS (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018.
